LEGO LOTR 79008 Pirate Ship Ambush

Best Product From LEGO

Great for LOTR fans, but not as good as similar Lego ships
This is a great Lego set if you're a LOTR fan. It is reasonably challenging and looks great once assembled. Comes with a great orange colored tool that can be used to remove thin Lego pieces (the ones with a flat top), helps keep your nails intact! The mini figure collection is better than most such sets, particularly the Army of the Dead figures (lot of them).

That said, the set seems somewhat incomplete or flimsy compared to other similar sets (we've made Black Pearl and Queen's Revenge from Pirates of the Caribbean collection - those were fantastic!). This one seems to be less intricate with large base pieces that makes it easier to assemble, and leaves a lot of be desired once finished. If this was priced around $60, it would have been more reasonable. At the $100 price tag, I would have hoped for a finer level of detail. Still recommended, but if you're indifferent between franchises and are just looking for a good quality Lego ship, I would recommend one from the...

A delight for Lego fans and LOTR fans alike.
I just finished building this one, and wow, what project. The flagship (so to speak) of the second wave of LOTR Lego sets, this is definitely for fans of more complex builds. At least I found putting all the little pieces together a bit of a challenge. I had a few minor problems with the sail assembly and a few times I had to backtrack because I misread the pictures in the booklet, but personally, that's what I enjoy about Lego--the challenge and personal involvement.

Tho, to be completely honest, the real stars of the show, as always, are the mini-figs, and wow, what a selection you get with this set. You get the three main characters, a good representation of the Army of the Dead, a couple of Orcs with their own battle wagon, and to top things off, they included a Cosair Pirate as well. Needless to say, one of the most generous selections of mini-figs I've seen yet. Also, if your a fan of little tiny accessories--treasure chests, wine bottles, loafs of bread, gold coins,...
The latest ship in LEGO's lineup is a little bit underwhelming...
I'm an AFOL, and this ship is my 4th ship from Lego (after Imperial Flagship, Black Pearl and Queen Anne's Revenge). Going from that, this ship is a little bit underwhelming after it is finished. Sure it is fun when you build it, but once everything is done, you just have this feeling that it could've been something more. I am not sure if it is because of the cheaper price (although it is the same price as Black Pearl) but the presence is just not there.

Anyway don't let me dissuade you from buying the ship. If this is your ship, it is a good set with the variety of minifigs that come with it.

Cheers!
